We’ve all heard that cliché—whether you’re trying to lose weight, improve your relationships, or embark on an endeavor that lands you a new job, a promotion, or even your own business.
Having the right mindset in approaching life sets you up for success. Like most of us, we struggle to follow through with what we want or need to do—so why don’t we?
Personally, I’ve made a lot of excuses, such as not having enough time, energy, or money to start pursuing my dreams. However, we eventually realize that most of our so-called obstacles are more of a mindset issue than an actual limitation.
Sure, some people don’t have the funding to start a business that explores Mars, but if it comes down to what we genuinely want to do (and assuming it’s something realistic, like not flying to another planet), we can make time for it and open our minds to endless possibilities.
So let’s get started…

Refresh Your Mind
In this day and age, we are bombarded with loads of responsibilities, information, and distractions. It can be overwhelming and exhausting. I see so many people trying to keep it together, and I get it—life is tough, and it feels like an endless cycle of overstimulation that makes it hard to focus.
Personally, I’ve experienced this firsthand when I try to multitask and squeeze in everything I “think” I need to do.
Do I really need to watch a YouTube video while washing dishes? Watch TV while stretching? Or do Duolingo while using the bathroom? Of course not!
I realized that I don’t have to overload my senses just to feel productive. Instead, I do my best to focus on what truly matters and embrace moments of silence.
It’s about cutting out the weeds (TV, YouTube, endless scrolling) and prioritizing what matters to me—like writing this blog!
Read Self-Help Finance Books
I know—financial books? You might think watching paint dry is more exciting. But trust me, once you get into them, they can be life-changing. Nowadays, we have amazing books like You Are a Badass at Making Money or The Rat Race Escape—both personal favorites of mine.
I started with refreshing your mind because once we calm down from the constant mental noise, we can start reading things that may not seem interesting at first but could eventually become something we crave.
Think of it like working out at the gym. At first, you might go because a friend dragged you along on a free day. But as you get into the habit and start seeing results, it becomes a confidence-boosting part of your identity.
Find a Role Model for Inspiration
Remember when you were a kid and had that moment of thinking, I want to be like them someday!? For me, that person was my eldest sister, who became a nurse. Her hard work and sacrifice—moving from the Philippines to the U.S.—showed me how financial stability can make a real impact on the quality of life.
If you don’t have someone in mind, start reading financial success stories. You’ll begin to see patterns and find role models who inspire you. Just be cautious of so-called “influencers” flaunting fancy cars and pushing expensive, get-rich-quick seminars. Instead, learn from real people who’ve walked different paths in life, but always take advice with a grain of salt.
As you achieve your own goals, remember that learning never stops. Life is an ongoing journey of growth, and you have the power to make an impact in your own unique way.
Find Your Why
If everything else fails, this is the big kicker: find what made you read this article in the first place. What keeps you up at night? What burns inside you, pushing you to make a difference in the world?
There’s an incredible book, Find Your Why by Simon Sinek, that explains this concept perfectly. Your perseverance, goal setting, and eventual success all start with understanding your “why.”
When times get tough, and even when you’ve reached success, knowing your “why” will help you push through challenges and set new milestones.
Find Help
I say this because I know I’m human—I have shortcomings and failures. Seeking guidance, whether from a mentor or a professional like a mental health specialist, is crucial when we find ourselves struggling.
Recognizing when we need help and actually reaching out is a vital step toward building a stronger mindset and setting ourselves up for a successful future.
As a healthcare professional, I understand that mental health is something we should never take lightly. I once heard a saying: Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your emotions, your emotions become your actions, and your actions lead to your success.

Scenario: Luke’s Story
Luke, a physical therapist making $80,000 a year, finally landed a great job after years of struggle. Coming from a poor background, he suddenly had access to loans for a fancy car, a big house, and all the luxuries he couldn’t afford before.
But then, he paused.
He remembered why he worked so hard to graduate, pass the board, and gain financial freedom. It wasn’t to splurge—it was to secure his future and support his family.
Instead of falling into the trap of overspending, Luke chose a different path. He learned how to save, invest, and start a side business. Most importantly, he sent financial support to his family back home in the Philippines—the very people who sacrificed to help him reach where he is today.
